Our local WI:
Heage WI elects a committee each November at the General Meeting.
This includes a President, Secretary and Treasurer as well as between 5 and 9 other members, who together organise the programme of meetings and activities.
In addition to the elected members there are volunteers who assist in a variety of ways with the smooth running of the local WI.
The Derbyshire Federation of WIs (DFWI)
Heage WI is part of the Derbyshire Federation of WIs.
DFWI organises two meetings per year; both of which are open to all members. In the Spring there is the Annual Council Meeting where the Federation’s accounts are presented and later in the year the Autumn Federation Meeting takes place. Each Institute sends one member specifically as a delegate who is required to vote on behalf of the Institute and to report back on the meeting. Both meetings offer the opportunity to meet with fellow WI members and to hear excellent speakers.
DFWI produces The Derbyshire Link every month except August. Members currently pay £3.96 per year for this newsletter which enables them to learn of opportunities within DFWI and get news of other WIs.
The National Federation of WIs (NFWI)
The Women's Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation's aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK. The WI celebrated its centenary in 2015 and currently has over 210,000 members in around 6,600 WIs.
The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.
